F Is For...Fullmetal Alchemist!

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return,
To obtain,
Something of equal value must be lost.
That is alchemy's first law of equivalent exchange.
In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth.

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of, if the not 'the best' anime out there! The story focuses on two brothers who suffer a tragedy when attempting to bring their dead mother back to life using alchemy and a technique called human transmutation. However it goes horribly wrong and Alphonse Elric loses his body. Edward Elric, the older brother, loses his left leg and then sacrifices his right arm to attach Alphonse's soul to a suit of armour so he can stay alive.

The series then focuses on the Elric brother's journey to find the philosopher's stone and regain their bodies. However there are also homunculi after the stone who need it to survive.

Edward later becomes a State Alchemist after passing the trials and his friend Winry creates a special automail leg and arm for him which are quite strong yet often need repairing due to the scrapes he gets into. Edward also has the ability to use alchemy without drawing a transmutation circle unlike many other alchemists who require one. His alchemy is quite cool, being able to manipulate his surroundings or crafting his automail into weapons.

Don't refer to his height though as he's slightly touchy about it...

WHO YOU CALLING SHORT!?!?!?

Although he lost his body, Alphonse is quite strong in that suit of armour of his but if the seal is rubbed off it then he will die.

A friend of mine introduced me to this anime and I fell in love with it. The characters are very memorable such as the homunculi, Lust, Envy and Gluttony and the State Alchemists, Roy Mustang, Major Armstrong and more. In fact I'm heading to New York Comic Con with some friends in a few months time and one of the gang suggested we dress up as the military from Fullmetal Alchemist. We haven't decided on anything yet but I can't wait!

I also plan to head to Cardiff Comic Con a month later but that will seem like a downer compared to New York.

Anyway FMA!! Throw in strong storylines, catchy opening and ending themes, comedic moments and the outcome is an instant classic. There's 51 episodes in the original series run and I could watch them again in an instant. I have started FMA Brotherhood but only seen around 20 episodes so far and I'm still to watch the 2nd FMA movie. I hear Brotherhood follows the manga more after the original series deterred away from it in the 2nd half.

FMA is one that needs to be in your anime collection and the theme tunes should be on your playlist. They are on mine ;)
Seriously, I've posted the opening to season 1 before but go check them out on YouTube!

I hope to find more classics like this soon but at the current moment this ranks as my number 1 anime.

Maybe I'll start watching it again after publishing this post...
