I Finally Completed Blaster Master!

Well it took me long enough! You remember a little post I published last year about a game called Blaster Master? Welql I finally completed it! That's how many years in the making?

A lot.

The truth is though it was such a hard game that I would never stand a chance completing it without using the good old short cut of save states! Yes, that's the only way I managed to complete it. But I finally did it and that's another to cross off my list.

Great game.

Hard, very hard.

Definitely worth a play.

Do you rescue the frog that jumped down the hole into the treacherous underground caverns?

There's also a sequel but um, uh, well it's not very good in my opinion. A let down after the first. I won't be delving into it again.

Now...what other NES classics have I yet to finish???

Retro Gaming Tougher Than Current Day Gaming?

Do you remember those days? The days when you couldn't just save your progress and come back to your game a few days later? The days when it mattered how many lives you lost and how accurate your gaming had to be to beat just one title?

Those were the best days of my life!

It wasn't the summer of 69 though, more early 90's when NES and Mega Drive were all the rage. I enjoyed spending endless hours of fun on those consoles and wouldn't change a minute of it. I even revisit my old games on occasion even though modern gaming takes up the majority of my time.

So being a veteran gamer I thought the old games of my childhood should be no problem to complete right? How wrong I was!

I died. A lot.

My Gaming History

I can't remember how old I was when I experienced my first video game but I do remember being given my first console, the Commodore 64. It was Christmas day, I was given a carrier bag full of cassettes which I thought were music at the time but my dad explained that they were games. I recognised ones like Garfield and Ghostbusters as I watched them on TV. When it came to setting up the console and loading the games I had no idea whatsoever so it was up to my dad to do it for me.

Bucky O'Hare NES (1992)

I arrived home from Primary School one day to find this game resting against my TV and being a fan of the cartoon I was very excited to say the least and it turned out to be a great game!

Bucky's crew are kidnapped by the toads in this game and taken to different planets. Needless to say Bucky then has to go and rescue them. The characters kidnapped are Willy, Deadeye, Jenny and Blinky. Bruiser is unfortunately not in the game and I was so looking forward to croaking some toads with him!

Mario Golf (NES 1992)

I have a confession to make. The name of this game is not Mario Golf. In fact it's called NES Open Tournament Golf. However to me and my friends it will always be Mario Golf as it starred Mario and Luigi. In fact I never took note of the real name at all to be honest.

This was the first golf game I ever played and in my opinion still the best. It was easy to play. The controls were quite simple as was the aiming etc. You could choose whether to strike the ball at the top, middle or bottom for extra spin. The wind direction played a big part in the courses so you often had to change your angle and stroke accordingly.

Ducktales 2 NES

Ducktales! Two-ooo! See what I did there? You're impressed right? Well anyway like I mentioned in an earlier blog I picked this game up at the Cardiff Film and Comic Con as it is rare to find, being released towards the end of the NES' lifespan. The guy promised me it was in full working order and gave me his card. Turns out he was right! I set up my old NES which worked perfectly and slid the game into the slot. Power on and away we go!

Blaster Master

Today a wasp stung me on my little finger and it hurt like crazy! Grrrrr! The wasp didn't survive for long but the pain in my finger did. Now why am I telling you this? Well the first time I was stung by a wasp I was a young boy innocently playing a game on the NES called Blaster Master. Hence todays wasp encounter reminded me of this old game.

Ducktales NES (1990)

Ducktales Woo-ooo! You knew that was coming right?
I absolutely loved this cartoon but for today I want to talk about the NES game released in late 1990.
The NES was the 2nd console I ever owned, the first being the Commodore 64 although I was too young to really be any good at using the old tape cassette machine.
So I consider the NES to be the first console where I understood what was going on. Most of my NES collection consists of cartoons I watched at the time and Super Mario.
