B Is For...Black Butler!

I discovered this anime on Netflix quite a while back and decided to give it a go. After viewing it for several minutes I almost turned it off as I couldn't stand listening to those posh, over-the-top, English accents! This had nothing to do with me being Welsh either!

However I carried on and soon adjusted to the voices (that makes me sound crazy) just like I did with Naruto's when I first watched it.

The series follows a young master, Ciel Phantomhive, Lord of the Phantomhive estate. He runs the manor following the death of his parents when he was 10 years old after they perished in a fire. Blinded with revenge Ciel creates a pact with a demon called Sebastian Michaelis who agrees to help Ciel avenge his parents murder but in return he will then consume Ciel's soul, hence Ciel's eyepatch that hides the mark of the pact.

When Ciel isn't seeking revenge for his parents, he aids Queen Elizabeth as her watchdog, solving the crimes of London while being aided by a bunch of odd characters as we well know animes are popular for. Sebastian comes in real handy with his abilities as a demon and there's not much he can't do. However not all Ciel's allies can be trusted and how far can he really trust Sebastian?

Although once you've made a pact with a demon you can't break it.

This is Grell, a grim reaper who fights with a chainsaw
and uhhhh has a crush on Sebastian...

I watched a few episodes and then a few more and this quickly turned out to be one of my favourite animes.

A great bunch of random characters and story arcs and the series wasn't drawn out like some. Then there was a 2nd season with two new characters, Alois Trancy, a crazy, sadistic young lord and his butler Claude Faustus. The story focuses on the battle between the two young lords but Claude also wants Ciel's soul just as Sebastian does. What's so special about Ciel??

Alois...that look says it all

Although the 2nd season was enjoyable it didn't grab me as much as the first. However I'm very happy as I've just discovered there's a 3rd season that will be aired in July :) and there's also a live action film that I've yet to see. Happy days indeed!

I'd like to accept the award for most stylish eyepatch!

Anime fans...check Black Butler out!

  1. B Is For...Black Blood Brothers!
Gotta watch that first then will have to check out Black Butler, sounds interesting :) Shame about the voice overs mind. Sometimes they're unbearable.

"Ten years after the Holy War in Hong Kong, Mochizuki Jirou, aka the Silver Blade, and the lone hero who fought and defeated the Kowloon Children despite the loss of his lover, returns to Japan with his young brother, Mochizuki Kotarou. The two quickly discover that the Kowloon Children who survived the Holy War are seeking to infiltrate the "Special Zone" ,a thriving city protected by an invisible barrier that will not allow Kowloon Children entrance, unless they're invited. Red Bloods refers to the humans; Black Bloods are the vampires, and the Mochizuki Brothers are Old Blood, the last descendants of an elite clan of vampires. When Kotarou is abducted by one of the Kowloon Children, Jirou has no choice but to fight once more."

  2. I've heard of Black Blood Brothers but never watched it. Takes me a while to get through a series although I did watch 7 episodes of Sword Art Online last night! Not too shabby. Might have to use it for S...

BBB is on my list :)
