The Evil Within

I always knew this game would be gory, tense and challenging and I was right. Oh boy was I right. I never played it in the dark either.

It was actually nice to play a different survival horror game that wasn't Dead Space or Resident Evil and they are great games in themselves...let's not talk about Resident Evil 6 though ok?

You play detective Sebastian Castellanos who along with his colleagues goes along to investigate a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. After witnessing his fellow officers die around him, killed by a man in white, he is knocked unconscious and wakes up in an horrific world of zombies, monsters and more. You thought your job was tough...

Honestly I didn't know what to make of The Evil Within at first. There's a stealth section early on where you have to sneak past this butcher with a chainsaw and yes I did die a few times on him. I would rather have taken my guns to him but after I passed this early frustration the game fell nicely into place for me.

Limited ammo, dark corridors, blood stained walls, some crazy bosses like the spider lady, Ruvik and my personal favourite although he was annoying to kill...Boxhead! Ok he's actually called The Keeper and he keeps on resurrecting every time you kill him if there's a safe in the room. A safe wrapped in barbed wire! Because that's his head. Sometimes there are multiple on the floor so your best bet is to run! He can even kill himself to end up elsewhere.

Killing him can be a challenge but just wait until the last chapter!

There didn't seem to be much of a story along the way but it all falls into place at the end.

A friend and I were playing at the same time and I had four more deaths than him so we were pretty close in that respect. It took me a few more extra hours to complete mind...maybe I like to explore a bit too much.

The guns were pretty cool. You have your basic handgun, shotgun, sniper rifle, crossbow (exploding bolts!), grenades and magnum to help you deliver headshots and to disintegrate enemies along the way. Also you collect matches that you can use to burn downed enemies to ensure they stay dead for good.

You can upgrade your weapons and abilities by collecting green gel. Every so often you come across a room with a cracked mirror that teleports you to a hospital reception where you can sit in some kind of torture chair to spend this gel. I know, it is a bit weird. This is where you can save your game and also use any secret keys you have found.

The last boss was a bit disappointing after the previous encounters, quite a bit cinematic but still the game was very good.

Yes I can still sleep with the light off. I had no choice after the bulb blew last night!

The survival horror genre is back!
