Ducktales Remastered
Well I said I'd try this game out and I did! Was planning to let the price drop a bit first but my recent obtaining of Ducktales 2 on the NES drew me into the Ducktales fever. So here it is in glorious HD!
The graphics are amazing and it's good to see an old NES favourite of mine has been given this much care and detail. Ducktales now has cutscenes and voice overs. Alan Young lends his voice to Scrooge McDuck who he voiced in the original series. He is currently 93 years of age! Thank you Alan!
There are a few new features to the game. A new level, 'The Money Box,' acts as a tutorial that sees the Beagle boys trying to rob Scrooge's fortune. This was a nice addition which sets you up for the rest of the game.
Where as you only had access to Scrooge's computer in the NES game you now have access to his office where you can spend money to unlock extras such as art and music or visit the money bin. It was awesome to dive in and swim around like you see in the cartoon!
The Levels are mainly the same with their short length and layout but some scenarios have been changed to reflect the story. It now makes a lot of sense detailing how Scrooge goes about searching for the treasure and what he does to reach it.
The cutscenes can start to get a bit frustrating at times especially on the 'Amazon' level when Scrooge stops to radio Launchpad every time he finds a coin.
Another addition to the remake are the boss battles. These have been beefed up and each one has new a pattern of attacks which can be rather annoying at first. You only get 3 lives to complete a level and some are tough. It takes you a couple of tries to learn the bosses patterns before you defeat them unless you get lucky. Three of the levels I passed with relative ease due to the fact that I played them many years ago, especially if you remember the secret passages hehe. Others though I had to attempt a few times due to the difficulty. This was frustrating though because once you run out of lives you have to start the level all over again! Meaning you have to collect all the money etc that you earned on your first attempt.
After you finish all the levels you get to play another new level and perhaps the most frustrating. You team up with Flintheart Glomgold, Scrooge's rival, to rescue his nephews from the evil Magica De Spell. This level takes place in a lava filled cavern which leads to an annoying end boss, followed by a chase, followed by another new addition- trying to escape! The NES game ends with the chase so imagine my surprise when this one didn't. So it caught me off-guard and took me a fair few attempts...on medium difficulty! Come on!
Overall though I really enjoyed this game. It was great seeing all the old characters and the majority if not all of them appear in the game, even Gizmoduck! In the 'African Mines' level the boss is from one of my favourite episodes called 'Earth Quack' where an underground race are causing earthquakes. They appear to be some kind of bouncing balls!
Once you finish the game guess what plays in the ending credits? The theme song! Ducktales! Woo-hoo!
Now I really want to go and watch the cartoon series all over again! Might just do that...
