Scrooge The Musical!

Every year I have Christmas traditions. These range from eating a chocolate before it's placed on the Christmas tree, watching the Muppet Christmas Carol that I wrote about last year, swapping pre-Christmas presents with friends and also watching 'Scrooge! The Musical'

I love this film. The first time I discovered it my friend and I were browsing through different channels on Christmas Eve and on it came three quarters of the way through. It was the part with the ghost of Christmas future and Scrooge falling down into his grave. We found it quite amusing because it was an older film and the special effects weren't obviously up to much those days. So we carried on watching and came upon a song called 'Thank You Very Much' sung by a character called Tommy Jenkins. It quickly became an instant favourite and we waited patiently for the next Christmas where we managed to enjoy the film in full.

T Is For...Team Rocket!

Prepare for trouble,
Make it double,
To protect the world from devastation,
To unite all peoples within our nation,
To denounce the evils of truth and love,
To extend our reach to the stars above,
Jessie!
James!
Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light,
Surrender now or prepare to fight,
Meowth! That's right!

If you've watched Pokemon then it's likely that Team Rocket are fan favourites of yours because they certainly are mine! Jessie and James are just class and have provided many entertaining moments from the anime. Hired to steal strong Pokemon and aided by Meowth, the bumbling trio turn their attention to Ash and pals and attempt to capture Pikachu on many, many occasions. However they almost always fail and end up being blasted off into the far distance!

Marine Boy: Splasher Sings!

Here's a clip of Splasher singing after being able to talk due to an invention created by Professor Fumble in the episode 'The Genius Dolphin'. He's manipulated into performing for an audience. Be warned, the voice can be a bit irritating. This video is taken direct off my channel

Holy Bat-Mania Batman!

Holy extravaganza! Holy eventuality! Holy camped cape crusaderness! Holy remastered HD! Holy, holy, holy, holy! Gosh Batman!

Robin said 'holy' an awful lot in the 60's Batman TV series whilst clenching his fist in his gloved hand. It was one of the things that the show was remembered for among many other tropes. Fans of the show longed to see the series released on DVD and blu-ray and a few weeks ago they finally had their prayers answered as the complete series is now available to purchase. So what better time to write about it?

S Is For...Sticker Books!

If you grew up in the 90s like moi then it is likely you would have owned at least one sticker book and spent your pocket money on packs of stickers at your local newsagents. I owned several and probably spent a good amount of my parents money on them too.

S was originally going to be Sword Art Online but Lovefilm didn't have the next disc I required so I haven't finished watching the series yet.

Fortunately one of my friends brought up the topic of sticker books in work and bingo! Here we are. I don't know how the conversation started but it brought back some good memories.

The Evil Within

I always knew this game would be gory, tense and challenging and I was right. Oh boy was I right. I never played it in the dark either.

It was actually nice to play a different survival horror game that wasn't Dead Space or Resident Evil and they are great games in themselves...let's not talk about Resident Evil 6 though ok?

You play detective Sebastian Castellanos who along with his colleagues goes along to investigate a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. After witnessing his fellow officers die around him, killed by a man in white, he is knocked unconscious and wakes up in an horrific world of zombies, monsters and more. You thought your job was tough...

Cardiff Comic Con November 8th 2014

This was my 3rd comic con of the year (Cardiff, New York, Cardiff) and it was a wet one. The weather was on another level but it didn't seem to dampen peoples spirits. Cosplayers were still aplenty and the Motorpoint Arena was as busy as ever!

This time the comic writers and artists were on the 2nd floor and I actually visited the gaming zone for the first time. It could have done with being a little bigger though, there were loads of people packed into that small room. I didn't get a chance to do any gaming but I have plenty of that at home to keep me happy.

The Tubers High Score Challenge!

Earlier this year myself and a friend, Steve, decided to challenge each other on YouTube at an arcade game. The premise was simple:

One credit, 3 lives, 3 practice runs and then go for it!

The game in question was Thunder Dragon 2 and Steve kicked my butt. He had played it a lot more mind...

It was quite fun so we decided to do another and another. By now or if not straight away another Tuber wanted to join in so we said yeah why not? The more the merrier! Several weeks down the line the High Score Challenge began to become more popular and we all kept in touch via Twitter. Each week it would be someone else's turn to pick the game of choice. As long as you could earn a score the game would qualify.

R Is For...Racing Hero!

I don't think I've covered a racing game on this blog yet so thought this game would be apt after playing it in the Tubers High Score Challenge a few weeks ago.

For those of you who don't know, THSC, is a group of YouTubers who participate in weekly high score challenges on arcade and retro classics. Myself and my good friend Steve started it and now have our own Facebook group for it too. I'll explain more in a future post.

Q Is For...The Queen's Nose!

Wouldn't life be so much simpler if you could make a wish? One that was destined to come true. Or maybe 10. With just one rub of the Queen's nose? Yeah that would be great! I...wait....what???

No, no, no, that's not what I meant! Don't go rubbing her Majesty's nose!

That wouldn't end well!

Use a 50p coin instead!

I Finally Completed Blaster Master!

Well it took me long enough! You remember a little post I published last year about a game called Blaster Master? Welql I finally completed it! That's how many years in the making?

A lot.

The truth is though it was such a hard game that I would never stand a chance completing it without using the good old short cut of save states! Yes, that's the only way I managed to complete it. But I finally did it and that's another to cross off my list.

Great game.

Hard, very hard.

Definitely worth a play.

Do you rescue the frog that jumped down the hole into the treacherous underground caverns?

There's also a sequel but um, uh, well it's not very good in my opinion. A let down after the first. I won't be delving into it again.

Now...what other NES classics have I yet to finish???

New York Comic Con 2014

A Small preview of a much larger crowd

Well...New York Comic Con is ever so slightly bigger than Cardiff...just a bit...multiplied by a hundred! I knew it was going to be huge but the scale of the Javits center blew my mind!

Wow just wow and wow again!

Teen Titans go!
I travelled to New York with 3 good friends with the sole purpose of the trip being NYCC. I'd only ever been to Cardiff CC before so this was going to be a real treat. We spent about 12 days here with two of those being at comic con. So after seeing the sights and driving down to Washington D.C for the weekend we hit comic con on the Thursday and Friday as the Saturday was sold out.

P Is For...Prince Planet!

No one can compare,
To the prince who wears,
A medallion on his chest!

Here's another 60's japanimation and unlike Marine Boy this one was aired all in classic black & white. After discovering MB several years ago and going through my 60's phase I discovered this series online and set about trying to obtain a copy. I was successful although 4 episodes of the collection are missing and I don't think there's many full sets out there.

O Is For...Once Upon A Time!

Could you imagine if you lived across the road from Rumplestiltskin or if your teacher was Snow White? Well that's what this TV show is all about. Fairy tale characters living amongst us in reality.

I wrote briefly about this is an earlier post pondering what character myself or my friends would be. I still don't think there's a character like me out there yet though, I'm just too unique ;)

N Is For...Noein

How do you pronounce this title? No-een? No-ine? Well apparently it's no-ay-een...

....moving on! I discovered this anime after finding a leaflet in my Naurto DVD advertising it. I was still new to the world of anime so figured if it's promoted with Naruto then it's worth a shot! After all I only chose Naruto because it contained ninjas...yeah...

M Is For...Matropolis! The First Anniversary!

This is crazy. Matropolis is now 1 years old! Wow! I can't believe it's been a year since I began this blog. Happy birthday Matropolis! Have a good one :)

It was when I was in Magic Kingdom, Orlando, last year that I decided to create my own blog. I was watching the 'Celebrate A Dream Come True' parade and as all of my Disney childhood memories passed by in floods I started thinking of those good old days. My first friends, cartoons, video games. I thought to myself that I could write a book on it. Then a few seconds later I had decided...I'm going to create my own blog!

L Is For...Lara Croft!

Do you remember your first time with Miss Croft? I do! I was over a friend's who had recently picked up a copy of Tomb Raider 2 for PC and he said I'd love it and I did.

This was a game like none I'd ever seen and you just had to love those blocky graphics! We all know the story of Lara and the Tomb Raider series (the clue is in the title) and I'm guessing most of us are fans of at least one of her adventures.

K Is For...Kiki's Delivery Service!

Have you ever had your mail delivered by a witch? No, me neither. However, this is the plot for this animated film from Studio Ghibli back in 1989.

Kiki is a thirteen year old girl who leaves her home to train as a witch along with her faithful black cat Jiji. Instead of taking a train, bus or plane she uses her broomstick to fly across the world. How easier would that be? Personally I can't see myself doing it mind.

J Is For...Jurassic park!

The theme music is playing in my head now as I write this. I love that music and this was a classic! I first saw Jurassic Park in the cinema with my parents when I was a kid and thought it was great!

In fact I am now literally listening to the soundtrack! Thanks Spotify!

So yeah everyone knows what this film is about- dinosaurs! Basically scientists find a way to breed dinosaurs and plan to open a park for tourists to visit. Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler take a small group to visit the park to make sure it's safe and of course find out it isn't quite so easy to contain dinosaurs especially the T-Rex! Queue much screaming, running and being devoured on the toilet! Did anyone else find that scene amusing? Anyhow these unlucky individuals attempt to escape the island.

I Is For...Infamous!

If you had super powers would you save the world or destroy it? This is the choice you have to make from this video game released back in 2009 for the PS3.

The character you play is Cole MacGraph, who becomes caught in an explosion that grants him with electricity based powers.

So the explosion has destroyed a lot of the city and peace needs to be restored but it's up to you how you do it. Do you become it's saviour or conqueror? Tough choices eh? Certain missions offer you a path to choose- good or evil? Each path grants you with additional powers that you can upgrade along the way with experience points.

H Is For...Halfway Across The Galaxy And Turn Left!

This was an Australian kids TV show back in the 90's and my favourite ever to come out of the country. I was hooked on this after viewing just the intro, love that music! I even missed the first so many episodes but still went back every morning during the school summer holidays to watch it. I even managed to hook my friends on the show.

G Is For...The Goonies!

Don't be one of those awkward people who will say that 'The Goonies' begins with a T, you drop 'the' from the title ok?

Now that's out of the way...

Are the Goonies good enough?

Well Cyndi Lauper thinks so and so do I!

F Is For...Fullmetal Alchemist!

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return,
To obtain,
Something of equal value must be lost.
That is alchemy's first law of equivalent exchange.
In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth.

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of, if the not 'the best' anime out there! The story focuses on two brothers who suffer a tragedy when attempting to bring their dead mother back to life using alchemy and a technique called human transmutation. However it goes horribly wrong and Alphonse Elric loses his body. Edward Elric, the older brother, loses his left leg and then sacrifices his right arm to attach Alphonse's soul to a suit of armour so he can stay alive.

E Is For...Evan Bonifant!

Tum Tum grew up
Or more precisely an interview with Evan Bonifant! For those of you who don't know him, Evan is an actor best known for his role as Tum Tum in 3 Ninjas Kick Back and as Buster in the Blues Brothers 2000. These are two of my favourite childhood films so I decided to message Evan and ask for an interview. He kindly agreed and here it is!

Evan, you are best known for your roles in the films listed above. What was it that influenced you in becoming an actor?

Evan: My Brother Adam. He was hired to be in a film called Toy Soldiers and I followed him to New York with my mother as I was only 4 years old and he was not old enough to chase the dream without my mother's assistance.

D Is For...Dead Space!

In space no one can hear you scream...but they can in your bedroom hiding beneath the quilt while you try to escape the Necromorphs attempting to tear you apart limb by limb.

When I first saw a preview for Dead Space in a playstation magazine I thought it was just a trashy gorefest that wouldn't gather much attention. Just killing aliens on a spaceship by dismembering them? Yeah great fun. Just trashy.

Well I was wrong as Dead Space is survival horror at its best and the dismembering is actually quite clever and fun.

C Is For...Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers!

Sometimes some crimes,
Go slipping through the cracks,
But these two,
Gumshoes,
Are picking up the slack,
There's no case too big,
No case too small,
When you need help just call,
Ch-ch-ch-Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers!

How catchy is that song? It's one of my favourite cartoon themes of all time and another childhood favourite that I used to watch on the weekends and I even owned some of the episodes on VHS.

B Is For...Black Butler!

I discovered this anime on Netflix quite a while back and decided to give it a go. After viewing it for several minutes I almost turned it off as I couldn't stand listening to those posh, over-the-top, English accents! This had nothing to do with me being Welsh either!

However I carried on and soon adjusted to the voices (that makes me sound crazy) just like I did with Naruto's when I first watched it.

A Is For...ActRaiser!

I've decided to do an A-Z series for the next 26 posts and to begin with we have a game I recently discovered called ActRaiser which was released for the SNES in 1992.

I knew little about this game but from the screenshots I found I figured it must be a side scrolling action game. Well I was only half right as it turns out there's a twist. There are simulations parts of the game too. You essentially play God by helping out townsfolk who have been plagued by monsters and demons. There are six lands on which you have to rebuild villages. Appearing as a baby angel you do this by flying overhead and indicating where villages should build their homes to.

Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate! The Legacy Of Monkey Island

'Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!'

Legendary words. Legendary game. At least in the eyes of many loyal Monkey Island fans like myself. For my 100th post there was nothing else I wanted to write about more than this; the series that got me hooked on point and click adventures and Monkey Island is the best of all.

Age Of Empires Big Daddy Cheat!

BOOM!
I was never one for strategy games but Age Of Empires is one that I enjoyed. I didn't play many games on the PC back in the day as I would always go out and buy the ones that wouldn't run on my specifications. Doh! But AOE did install and run perfectly and I spent many hours of enjoyment on it.

There's Millions Of Dead Fish All Under One Shoe!

It's called Toys R Us!

Wait...

Is that right?

Well anyway Toys R Us was the place to be when I was a kid. Every trip to Cardiff had to include a visit to my favourite toy shop otherwise I wouldn't be a happy bunny. Seriously, being dragged around clothes shops with your parents is ultra boring. It was Toys R Us or no go!

How Addictive Are Video Games?

Growing up a week rarely went by where I wasn't on a console spending hours after hours of completing levels and gathering all collectibles within a game. Whether it be Tomb Raider, Micro Machines, Final Fantasy or Mario, most of my free time was spent gaming.

I was well and truly addicted. I still went out and played with my friends using our wild imaginations but if it came to a game of football then I would always prefer to play it on screen rather than kick a ball around a park. This has nothing to do with the fact that I'm not very good at football of course...

My Reader Profile In OPM2 Magazine!

Yes I once featured in a magazine, perhaps not a huge article but a small section none the less! The magazine in question is Official Playstation 2 Magazine, OPM2 for short! Every issue featured a reader profile giving some basic information about yourself and what your favourite games were etc.

If A Theme Park Ride Was Based On The Joker...

...then The Smiler would be it!

This past weekend was my best mate's stag do so we decided to hit Alton Towers! Out of the six of us that went only 3 brave souls descended upon The Smiler! Those were Jay, Joel and myself, 3 legends, one scary looking coaster and a creepy logo!

Anime: Less Talk And More Action!

'Urgh...this fight takes how long!?'

'And now behold! I will finish you off with my secret technique! I call it the ultimate jutsu, known only by the members of my clan, passed down from generation to generation. This move will paralyse you from the neck down and your chakra will be cut off completely. How do I do this? Well...'

Jump several episodes ahead and maybe he would have finished talking. Seriously some anime fight scenes featured in Naruto can be a drag. Yes the Shikamaru pun was intended.

Let's Rock & Ride!

I remember shouting that every time my friends and I set off down the street on our bikes heading into an adventure that was only limited by imagination. Of course we had been watching Biker Mice From Mars first, the cartoon we had learnt the phrase from.

You used to do that too right?

My Playstation Zone

Ok there's something I want to share that I did as a kid. I went through this phase where I would cut out characters of my favourite games or comics and stick them on the wall in the spare bedroom.

I created what I called a 'Playstation Zone'.

Which Bucky Do You Think Of?

Bucky relates to two characters as far as I know.

Bucky Barnes and Captain Bucky O'Hare.

Lately I've seen a lot of tweets about people automatically thinking of Bucky O'Hare instead of Cap's sidekick when the name Bucky is mentioned.

Disney's Adventures Of The Gummi Bears

Dashing and daring,
Courageous and caring,
Faithful and friendly with stories to share!
All through the forest,
 They sing out in chorus,
Marching along as their song fills the air!

Gummi Bears!
Bouncing here and there and everywhere,
High adventure that's beyond compare,
They are the Gummi Bears!

Ah Saturday morning cartoons when you were a kid. Nothing beats them. Whether it was Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Batman: The Animated Series and a lot more; each played a definitive role in my early life. Those days were great and I loved my childhood. Just a ton of fun, innocence and no worries.

Remember When The WWF Hardcore Championship Was Defended 24/7?

Yeah I know I know! It's called WWE now but back in the attitude era it was WWF and the Hardcore Championship presented viewers with some of the most craziest matches and scenarios you could watch on TV!

Back then wrestling was awesome and on a different level to what you watch today although I guess that's because WWE became a PG and any bloodshed cannot not be shown anymore. One match last year had to be stopped so one of the wrestlers could have blood wiped off his face before the match could continue. Thankfully we can all still look back and relive those classic moments such as...

The Most Shocking Moment In WWE History!!

I've just finished watching Wrestlemania 30. Did that just happen????? Crazy!!! Insane!!! What!? Seriously? Is this a joke? Did they count to 3 by accident? Is this a screw job? Will the match be restarted???????

Devil May Cry And Makes Castlevania Lords Of Shadow 2 Weep

After recently completing both of these games I have to say that the reboot of Devil May Cry bested Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 in the battle to save mankind.

Whereas Castlevania felt heavy to play DMC seemed light and easy flowing. The gameplay was great and not too complicated. Also I managed to follow the story while I got a bit lost with Castlevania at times. Or maybe I just zoned out, who knows?

I prefer the new look of Dante to the older white haired version. I know some fans were disappointed but I think it worked out very well. I believe the designers were right to give Dante a fresher look as it was a reboot.

Upgrading your abilities is simple too. You simply earn enough souls and select which upgrade you want. The upgrade system was much simpler to use than Vania 2 and presented more clearly.

The soundtrack was pretty good too ;)

This isn't a personal attack against a Castlevania, it's a good game. I'm just comparing the two as I played one after the other and DMC was the more enjoyable experience.

I just hope the next DMC is just as good and the next Castlevania improves which I think it will :)

My Best April Fools Gag!

April Fools day once again eh? Did you get pranked? I didn't but I did leave a couple of fake zombies downstairs for my parents to find! Mwahahaha!

However my best prank was several years ago. I waited for my parents to go to bed and proceeded to turn the furniture upside down. I took ornaments off shelves and left them lying on the floor. I threw cushions around and tilted hanging pictures sideways. I pulled out all kitchen chairs and left them in odd positions. I made the house look like we had a poltergeist!

My dad was on a morning shift and came down at 5:00am. I was awake, silently laughing to myself. It was all quiet. After a few minutes he came back upstairs and asked my Mum to come down and have a look. What he didn't know was that my mum was in on it and she kept a straight face. He was quite astonished.

What made this better was that he'd forgotten it was April 1st and I had never done anything like this before. Eventually my Mum gave it away by laughing and my Dad found the April Fools note on top of his lunchbox. He thought the gag was so good that he was laughing to himself on the way to work!

Later he told me that he thought I'd been a bit untidy at first, then that we had been burgled and finally thought we had a ghost! Result!

I haven't been able to better myself since but I'm always going to try.

Just thought I'd share ;)

Retro Gaming Tougher Than Current Day Gaming?

Do you remember those days? The days when you couldn't just save your progress and come back to your game a few days later? The days when it mattered how many lives you lost and how accurate your gaming had to be to beat just one title?

Those were the best days of my life!

It wasn't the summer of 69 though, more early 90's when NES and Mega Drive were all the rage. I enjoyed spending endless hours of fun on those consoles and wouldn't change a minute of it. I even revisit my old games on occasion even though modern gaming takes up the majority of my time.

So being a veteran gamer I thought the old games of my childhood should be no problem to complete right? How wrong I was!

I died. A lot.

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2

Good but not great.

That's my overall feeling of Lords of Shadow 2.

I was quite looking forward to this game and the release date came around quicker than expected. I really enjoyed the first and thought the second would be just as good or better. However I'm not sure if it was.

Who Would Win? Angry Birds VS Worms

A while back I decided to do a series called 'Who Would Win?' Since then my mind has been blank until I wrote about Worms recently. So welcome to the 2nd 'Who Would Win?'

The early bird catches the worm right?

Well what if that worm pulled out a bazooka or shoved a Holy Hand Grenade down that bird's mouth? Boom!

I have been playing Worms for years and have only ever played one Angry Birds game. So I might be a bit biased but...

Sure birds can fling themselves like bombs at the worms and deploy smaller bird bombs but a worm could just retaliate with their own version known to us as a cluster bomb. Yeah the birds might have their tricks and squash a few worms here and there but look at the arsenal the worms have.

Bazookas, grenades, shotgun, minigun, dynamite, sheep, super sheep, banana bombs, air strikes, teleport, blow torch, ninja rope and of course if a bird is flying straight at you then the best option is to pull a baseball bat out and wham! Smash that bird out of the park!

So in my eyes regardless of your boomerang type birds, heavy, small etc the worms would destroy them all.

Victory!

No birds or worms were harmed during the creation of this post.

Worms

Late 1995 or early 1996 I was over a friend's house watching him play a video game on the Sega Mega Drive. My first thought was what kind of war game was he playing today as he loved his strategy games. I saw him controlling one of the soldiers across the landscape and selecting a bazooka. Ok nothing new here I thought until I realised the soldiers occupying the screen were actually worms!

What!? Worms? With weapons? Wait is that dynamite they're using? A Cluster Bomb? Banana Bomb?

Team 17 had created a classic.

A short while later I persuaded my parents to buy it for me and it became an instant favourite.

It didn't take long to get used to and I spent many hours blasting away at enemy worms. Shotgun, fire punch, dragon punch, teleport and kamikaze were just a few of the options available although being the first game in the series the selection wasn't huge but enough.

You could name your own worms too. As I was huge into Xena at the time I named my team after the show. Of course I had Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and Callisto. Sometimes Ares too haha. I often named them after my friends and myself and would always try to keep 'Mat' alive and be the best in the team! The imagination of a child eh?
The only unfortunate thing was that you couldn't save your data so I ended up manually inputting the names each new play session.

The game featured it's own teams and I always remember disliking Old School and having a rivalry with them.

I remember my friend announcing she had worms once. She meant the game but many laughs were had at her expense.

Worms was that popular that a sequel would be released for the PC. I loved the short animation sequences they would have at the beginning of the game. The sequel would offer more weapons such as Super Sheep and the Old Woman. You could also make your own maps and select what theme to use for the landscape. Also you could now edit your teams and give them unique accents and head gear.

Now everyone say cheese!

One of my favourite things to do on Worms is to teleport all the worms on top of each other and place a dynamite at the bottom. Boom! Watch those worms fly!

The Holy Hand grenade was awesome too and Concrete Donkey. You could change the settings to these weapons and if you increased the range and power of the minigun you could wipe out entire maps in a small number of moves.

Anyone ever play a level and attempt to destroy it all without killing the other worms first?

Speaking of killing worms...when they lost all their health they would blow themselves up and become gravestones.

This game is really fun to play online or with friends, however, I hate bad losers. A random added me on PSN after I defeated them at a game of Worms. They challenged me to another and I killed 3 of their 4 worms in two shots. So what did they do? End the game...

If you can't stand the worm then stay out of the garden!

That is the saying right?

I don't like losing but I will always play a game to the end. I've won with just one worm before so just try it. Maybe I'll list their PSN ID to shame them mwahahaha!

Ah man now I got to go play this great game! The only problem with writing this blog is that it makes me want to play and watch all the old childhood favourites when I really need to crack on with Castlevania 2!

Ha! Something I just remembered from my childhood. I used to draw scenarios of worms battling each other when I was bored in school or at home. Personally I think they were pretty good (actually pretty bad) and if I find any I will upload them.

18 years later and I'm still playing this great game with friends! Wait? 18 years!?!? Man that is crazy as! Take me back to my childhood!

However old this body gets my inner child will always be here.

Release the inner worm!
